No I haven't read his book. From the reviews it looks more like a philosophical work with novel yet imprecise definitions of consciousness that philosophers can argue about for years to come with no resolution.
This isn't exactly news, although, we are surely more advanced than we once were. The case that immediately comes to mind is Phineas Gage. There are, however, many other recorded cases like this one.
Yes, Phinias Gage is a classic :).

I think I first heard of him on some old PBS special on the brain where the whole explosion was re-enacted.
